I love reading physical books. But once I’ve finished one, it usually goes back on the shelf, even if I know I’m unlikely to read it again. Meanwhile, I’m already looking for my next book.

I started ShelfMates because I wanted to see if the books I’d already enjoyed could help me find my next read.

With ShelfMates, you list a book you’re happy to pass on. When it reaches its next reader, you earn a credit you can use to claim another member’s book. I might pass a crime novel on to someone in Auckland and use that credit to pick up a memoir from someone else. There’s no need to find two people who happen to want each other’s books.

I’m a big fan of libraries and community book boxes. Part of the fun of a book box is the surprise of what’s inside. Sometimes, though, I’d like to see what’s available before I head out. And when I’m passing on a favourite, I like knowing it’s going to someone who’s keen to read it.

That’s also what got me thinking about workplaces, schools and community groups. Imagine checking what’s on your workplace bookshelf from your desk, claiming a book and picking it up on your way home. That’s the idea behind ShelfMates Rooms, and I’d love to try it with a group that already enjoys sharing books.

It’s still early days. If you’ve got a book you’d happily pass on, give ShelfMates a go. I’d love to hear what works for you and what would make it easier.
