Beta participation terms
Effective 31 October 2026. These terms apply to participation in the free ShelfMates open beta.
ShelfMates is operated by Smpl Group Limited, Auckland, New Zealand. Contact support@shelfmates.co.nz for service questions, disputes or account requests. Please also read our privacy notice.
A community book exchange
ShelfMates helps members arrange exchanges of physical books in New Zealand. The beta has no membership fee and does not collect payments for books or postage. Any future paid service will be explained separately before you choose to buy it.
One standard book costs one credit. Listing a book does not earn a credit; the sender earns a credit when receipt is confirmed. Outside advertised signup promotions, new accounts start with zero credits unless an operator makes an explicit grant. An advertised signup offer awards its stated starting credits once when a new account first verifies its email during the offer. An exchange promotion awards its advertised total to the sender when receipt is confirmed during the offer, regardless of when the request was made. Claiming a standard book still costs one credit. Promotion dates include the final day in Auckland time. Only one promotion of each type applies; signup and exchange offers can run together. Offers may end early for operational or abuse reasons; credits already awarded remain in your wallet. We do not retrospectively award expired offers. Credits are service units, have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for money. Do not create false listings, exchanges or accounts to obtain credits.
Your account and listings
Use an email account you control, keep sign-in links private and provide accurate information. List only books you own or are authorised to give away. Describe the edition and condition honestly, including damage or missing pages. Use photos and text you have permission to share. Do not list unlawful material or use the service for spam, harassment, discrimination or fraud.
Email verification confirms control of an inbox; it does not verify a person's identity, ownership of a book or reliability. Reviews and exchange history are member feedback, not a guarantee.
Pickup and shipping
Listings may offer pickup, shipping or both. Agree pickup details through the exchange and choose a location you feel comfortable using. For shipping, the sender arranges and pays postage directly. ShelfMates does not purchase labels, carry books or insure deliveries. Do not request postage payments from the claimer during this beta.
A shipping claimer must supply a usable delivery address and confirm sharing it with the sender. The sender may use that address only to fulfil the exchange, must keep it private and should remove their copy when no longer needed. Do not copy or reuse another member's details for marketing or unrelated contact.
Only confirm receipt after the book arrives. If a book is missing, materially misdescribed or an exchange cannot proceed, use “Report a problem” within the exchange or email support. We can review the exchange record, help resolve the issue and make appropriate account or credit adjustments; we cannot guarantee recovery of a book.
Reviews, support and moderation
Keep reviews factual, relevant to the completed exchange and free of private contact details. We may investigate reports, hide inappropriate content, restrict listings or suspend accounts for misuse or safety concerns. You can contact support to ask for a moderation decision to be reviewed. Private product feedback goes to the operator.
Beta availability and changes
The service is still being developed and may have interruptions, errors or feature changes. We will communicate material changes to these terms and explain when they take effect. You can stop using the service and request account closure through support; contact us to resolve any active exchanges first.
These terms are governed by New Zealand law. Nothing in them excludes or limits rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
